Counselling for Anxiety

Gentle illustration symbolising anxiety, hope and emotional healing through counselling

Anxiety counselling in Witham, Chelmsford and online

Anxiety can affect people in many different ways. You may feel constantly on edge, overwhelmed, panicky, tense, or unable to switch off. You may find yourself overthinking conversations, worrying about what might happen, or feeling caught in familiar patterns that are difficult to understand.

Sometimes anxiety has an obvious cause. At other times, it can feel harder to explain. You may know that something feels wrong, but not be sure why.

I offer private counselling for anxiety in Witham, Chelmsford and online. Counselling offers a confidential space to talk, think and begin to make sense of what may be happening beneath the surface.

How anxiety can feel

Anxiety is not always just worry. It can affect your thoughts, body, relationships, work and everyday life.

You may be experiencing:

  • Overthinking or constant worry

  • Panic or feelings of dread

  • Difficulty relaxing or switching off

  • Feeling tense, restless or on alert

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Avoiding certain situations

  • Worrying what others think

  • Feeling overwhelmed by ordinary tasks

  • Physical symptoms such as tightness, nausea, shakiness or a racing heart

  • A sense that something bad might happen, even when you cannot explain why

You do not need to have a diagnosis of anxiety to come to counselling. It may simply be that anxiety, stress or fear is beginning to take up too much space in your life.

How counselling may help with anxiety

Counselling can offer time to slow things down and think about what your anxiety may be connected to. Rather than only focusing on symptoms, psychodynamic counselling is interested in the meaning behind what you are feeling.

Together, we may think about what tends to trigger anxiety, how you respond when you feel overwhelmed, and whether earlier experiences or relationship patterns may be shaping how safe, responsible, judged or alone you feel now.

This does not mean looking for simple answers or blaming the past. It means gently exploring the links between what is happening now and what may have become familiar over time.

A psychodynamic approach to anxiety

My approach is psychodynamic, which means we can think together about both present difficulties and deeper patterns. Anxiety may sometimes be linked with feelings that have been pushed aside, expectations you place on yourself, fears about others, or experiences that have left you feeling uncertain, unsafe or not good enough.

Counselling is not about being told to “stop worrying” or being given quick advice. It is a regular space where your thoughts and feelings can be taken seriously and understood at your pace.

Over time, this may help you develop a clearer understanding of yourself, your relationships and the situations that leave you feeling anxious or overwhelmed.

Anxiety, relationships and feeling stuck

For some people, anxiety is closely connected with relationships. You may worry about upsetting people, being judged, getting things wrong, being rejected, or not being enough. You may find yourself saying yes when you want to say no, avoiding conflict, or feeling responsible for how other people feel.

These patterns can be painful and exhausting. Counselling can help you begin to notice them and think about where they may have come from.

Sessions

I offer counselling for anxiety face to face in Witham and Chelmsford, and online across the UK.

Ongoing counselling sessions last 50 minutes and usually take place weekly. I offer open-ended counselling, which means we do not need to decide at the beginning how many sessions you will have. We can continue for as long as the work feels useful, reviewing this together as we go.

Before arranging an assessment, I offer a free 15-minute introductory chat, either online or by telephone. This is an informal opportunity for you to tell me a little about what has brought you to counselling, ask any questions you may have, and get a sense of whether you would feel comfortable talking with me.

If you would like to continue, we can then arrange a free 50-minute initial consultation. This gives us more time to explore what you would like help with, for me to explain how I work, and for us both to consider whether counselling together feels like the right fit.

The assessment can take place face to face in Witham or Chelmsford, online, or by telephone.
